How Polarized Sunglasses Helped Spot an Alligator in the Water

It's easy in our business to just assume most people know what polarized sunglasses are. But then we see a story, like one that came out of Florida in January 2024, demonstrating that a lot of people really don't know.

The story involves a fisherman who spotted an alligator lurking on the bottom of a local canal. The gator could not be seen with the naked eye. But throwing on a pair of polarized sunglasses made it immediately visible. That fisherman wanted to demonstrate the effect, so he took off his sunglasses and put them in front of his phone to take a video. You can clearly see the gator in his footage.

Surprisingly, the video got over 2 million views in the first few days he posted it on social media. A well-known eyewear company even contacted the man to offer him a sponsorship deal. It turns out that a lot of people who saw his video knew nothing about polarized sunglasses or why they helped him spot the alligator.

Polarization Prevents Glare

Wholesale sunglasses are our business here at Olympic Eyewear. As such, we are intimately familiar with polarized sunglasses. If you are a retailer, we're guessing you probably have a handle on them too. But maybe your customers don't. So use the story as an educational tool.

Explain to your customers that polarization prevents glare. Embedded in a pair of polarized lenses is a thin film designed to filter out light moving in multiple directions, thereby only allowing light from one direction to pass through. Filtering out all the other light is what prevents glare.

When a fisherman looks at the water with the naked eye, he struggles to see what's under the surface because sunlight produces glare as it reflects off the water. The glare prevents the fisherman from seeing anything but the water itself.

Polarized sunglasses solve the problem. By breaking through the glare, the sunglasses allow that fisherman to see under the surface of the water. It's not magic, by the way. It's science.

Lots of Reasons to Prevent Glare

We sell all sorts of polarized sunglasses at wholesale prices. They are ideal for anglers. But anglers aren't the only ones who love them. It turns out there are lots of reasons to prevent glare, and every reason has a buyer behind it.

We sell sports sunglasses that are ideal for baseball players, tennis players, cyclists, and anyone else who enjoys outdoor sports. Preventing glare helps a baseball player keep his eye on the ball. It helps a cyclist keep his bike on the road. We could go on, but you get the point.

We also sell polarized wayfarers and aviators; wholesale sunglasses that are ideal when driving on sunny days. Preventing glare keeps drivers safer. It also leads to less eye strain on long drives.

Polarization Is Good for Consumers

Getting back to the Florida fisherman and his hack for spotting alligators in the water, it's clear that polarization is good for consumers. Polarized sunglasses make it easier to see things that otherwise might be difficult to see. Again, use this knowledge as a way to educate your customers.

If you live where alligators are a problem, polarized sunglasses could be a safety feature. Remind your customers to wear their polarized sunglasses when they're walking near any body of water. And if there are no gators where your customers live, there are still plenty of other reasons to invest in a good pair of polarized sunglasses. Let them know what those reasons are.
